Whether you are a school leaver, an adult returning to work or wanting a career change, or for those considering deferring their place at university, the brilliant thing about our Accountancy courses is that they are perfect for any age student.
Whichever level you study, you’ll become a member of Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) - the professional accountancy body.
Our Level 2/3 accountancy course in Chippenham is delivered in partnership with Mander Duffill to develop the region’s next generation of accountancy technicians.
To find out more, we caught up with a former AAT student, who returned years later and is now a lecturer with us. Discover how Rachel Mullins ended up in accountancy when Maths was far from her favourite subject!
Rachel said: Teaching accountancy was never on my list as a profession when I was growing up. Maths was not one of my favourite subjects and nor did I study it at university but here I am teaching Levels 2 and 3 and I thoroughly enjoy my job!
“I like meeting and working with different students and learning and developing as a teacher. It is very fulfilling and rewarding, particularly at the end of the academic year where we are not, when students and lecturers have risen above challenges and students achieve their desired results.”
Rachel graduated from university with a degree in Classical Civilisation but was unsure about what career path she wanted to pursue. She began working in retail and as she progressed, realised how much she enjoyed producing financial reports related to weekly sales as it added another dimension to her job.
She said: “Working in retail what not what I aspired to do long term and so in 2013 I made the decision to apply for the Level 2/3 AAT Fast Track course that could provide me with an opportunity to progress and have a career.”
Having some financial experience and a dad for a chartered accountant to help her if she got stuck was a bonus and Rachel was accepted onto the course.
Within a year Rachel had completed both the Level 2 and 3 saying: “The biggest surprise to me was not how hard it was, or the amount of work, but how much I enjoyed it!
“It was a challenge and I did need to study extra hours outside of College, but I enjoyed challenging myself.
“The College environment was really enjoyable for me, receiving first-hand support from lecturers and fellow students who, like me, wanted to complete the course.
“And the bonus was that I had two out of the three levels required to become fully AAT qualified in a year!”
Rachel then progressed onto her Level 4 and realised that she wanted to support others, just as her lecturers have supported her.
“I had encouraging and motivational lecturers throughout my studies and I wanted to be that person for other students,” she said.
Rachel worked in various accountancy roles to build up her skills and knowledge as well as gain practical experience and joined the College in 2017.
