Ever since enrolling on the Farm Mechanisation course at Wiltshire College & University Centre’s Lackham campus in 2000, Simon Williams has enjoyed a successful career – culminating in running his own business.
Now the head of agriculture machinery hire firm SW Hire, Simon has always been interested in farming. Having worked on farms prior to starting the National Diploma in Farm Mechanisation (NDFM) course at the College, he knew it was a career he wanted to pursue.
Living locally to Lackham, Simon said: “I knew a lot about the College, and its good reputation for land-based education is what made me want to study there.”
After finishing his course in 2003, Simon worked in Australia for a harvest before enrolling at Harper Adams University in Newport in 2004 to complete a degree in Agriculture with Land and Farm Management.
He explained: “During my time at university, I started a machinery hire business - SW Hire - and I have continued to grow this since finishing my course.
“The company now has a fleet of over 350 machines ranging from tractors, telehandlers, excavators, muck spreaders and trailers and these are supplied to over 900 customers anywhere in the UK.”
Offering his advice for current or prospective students looking to get into the industry, Simon added: “Take every opportunity you get to gain experience of the sector, always listen and learn from those already in the industry.”
