College celebrates as recent graduate finishes runner-up at university film awards

Salisbury

Wiltshire College & University Centre’s Higher Education department is celebrating a runners-up finish in a highly-coveted national filmmaking competition.

Todd Greengrass, who graduated from the BA (Hons) Film Production and Cinematography course at WCUC’s Salisbury campus over the summer, finished in second place at the recent Bill Vinten Guild of Television Camera Professionals University Awards.

The Bill Vinten GTC University Awards acknowledge excellent teaching of camerawork and craft skills within UK educational establishments. Todd’s runners-up finish was in recognition of his hard work and creative vision as Director of Photography on the graduate project ‘Collapse’.

‘Collapse’ tells the story of two brothers, risk adverse Cal and adventure loving Ethan, as they embark into a cave system. When a sudden rock collapse separates the two of them; Cal, who is now in a race against time, must fight for survival and escape the cave.

Todd said: “I’m very proud of how this film was realised through our perseverance and especially for the unending resilience of my camera crew and the crew as a whole, who fought through torrential weather to realise the vision I had set out for this film.

“The BA (Hons) Film Production and Cinematography course helped train this resilience into us and have helped propel us into the industry post-graduation, and for that I am very grateful.”

The filmmaker to take home the trophy was Harry Tatem from Coventry University, with Gabbi Wolfe from University of Portsmouth securing third place.

In total, WCUC had three nominations on the final shortlist of 12 for the award. Sam Stewart and Whillan Stewart were also nominated for their work as Camera Operators on ‘Star Crossed’ and ‘Pretty Follies’ respectively.

Kieron Evans, Programme Lead on the BA (Hons) Film Production and Cinematography course, said: “As a college, we are immensely proud to once again be recognised alongside much larger institutions for excellent teaching of camera work and craft skills, after previously taking home two prizes from the awards in 2021.

“All three films submitted to the Bill Vinten GTC University Awards this year were accepted. With only 12 films selected every year for the final shortlist, WCUC made up one quarter of all final nominations despite having a cohort of only 15 students.”

WCUC’s BA (Hons) Film Production and Cinematography course is taught in conjunction with Bournemouth University. Film and Digital Media courses are offered at WCUC from post-16 to university level. For more information, click here.
