Speaking from Downing Street yesterday evening, Boris Johnson told people to only leave the house to travel to work where absolutely necessary and to shop for essential items or to fulfil any medical or care needs.
All shops selling non-essential good have been ordered to close with immediate effect, along with playgrounds, libraries and churches, and people have also been asked to only leave the home to exercise once a day if necessary.
The police now has the powers to disperse gatherings of more than two people and issue fines for anyone not adhering to the new measures.
The Prime Minister said the restrictions would be under constant review and would be looked at again in three weeks.
He concluded by saying: “I urge you in this moment of national emergency to stay at home, protect our NHS and save lives.”
