Course Overview

Functional Skills Maths classes are available to adults (19+) at our Chippenham, Salisbury and Trowbridge campuses. Our classes start the week commencing 9th September 2024 and we accept new students onto the course throughout the year until March 2025. You can apply for our Functional Skills courses at any time from now until the end of February 2025. Once you have applied, we will send through a skills check to gauge your ability and determine a suitable course for you. Once returned to us, we will be in touch to arrange an interview, either face to face or over the phone if this is not possible; depending on the time of year, it may take up to two weeks to hear back from us, so please do not worry, if you do not hear back immediately. We will discuss the campus, the day and time of the sessions and the options available to you. We also offer our popular distance learning option, which gives students an opportunity to work independently at home, at a time that suits them. This course is overseen by a maths lecturer, who will offer support, but is largely student led, using an online learning platform called, Century.

What will I learn?

When you sign up to study maths, we will help you develop your core skills and knowledge in number calculations, money management, measurement, shape, space and handling data.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

Entry Level Maths is formally assessed internally.

Level 1 and 2 maths is assessed with a formal exam, which includes a non-calculator and a calculator section. This exam is marked externally by the Awarding Body (Edexcel).

The exams consist of scenario-based questions and take place under exam conditions at any time in the year and multiple attempts are permissible. You can achieve your qualification in as little as 12 weeks or take longer if needed.

Resources permitted in the examination room are: a pen with black ink, calculator, HB pencil, eraser and ruler graduated in centimetres and millimetres.

Internal assessments take place on a regular basis to develop and assess your skills and fully prepare you for the formal assessments needed to gain a qualification.

Entry Requirements

As part of the interview process, all applicants will complete an initial assessment.
Using the results from this and through discussion with you, we will be able to advise you about the course and qualification that is most suitable for you.
Your individual programme of study will be tailored to your needs through regular progress monitoring and discussion with your Lecturer.

Additional Costs and Information

If you have not previously achieved a Grade C or Grade 4 or above at GCSE, you may be eligible for full funding for your course. If you are not eligible, the course fee is £724.

You will be required to provide your own maths equipment which should include a calculator, paper and pens and a maths set.
