Course Overview

If you love animals and would like to pursue a career working with them, this course is the perfect starting point. Delivered at Lackham, our specialist campus for land-based study, the course covers a wide range of topics in animal care. You’ll get hands-on experience in routine animal handling at our new industry-level Animal Resource Centre, organic farm, dog grooming parlour and Blue Cross re-homing cattery. You will get the chance to work with a wide variety of domestic and exotic animals and also get involved in exciting projects such as within our innovative Zoological Garden. Our Animal Resource Centre is LAIA and DWA compliant.

What will I learn?

You will learn through both theory lessons and exciting practical experiences. Our Animal Resource Centre is the perfect classroom for hands-on learning, allowing you to work with animals in zoo-level enclosures, and learn how to move and handle them in domestic and managed environments. You will also gain knowledge about animals in the wild and the uses and domestication of animals. You’ll learn how to work with animals safely and effectively – routine duties such as cleaning, feeding and watering will give you experience of maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals on a daily basis, and build your confidence in a working environment.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

You will be assessed by a combination of written assignments, workbooks, class exercises and practical assessments. You will also be expected to complete a suitable work placement.

The final qualification on successful completion of the course is a City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Land-based Studies - Animal Care.

Entry Requirements

Usual entry requirements are 4 GCSEs at grade 1 or 2 or equivalent experience, but entry is determined on an individualised basis and subject to an interview.

Additional Costs and Information

Practical clothing must be worn during all practical sessions and is available to purchase from the online College shop. You will also need to supply your own personal protective equipment.

Enrichment activities such as trips and visits to shows and other animal related events are an important aspect of the programme. You will be expected to contribute to the cost of these activities, which is £150 via the College Shop. Please note that this cost is non-refundable.
