Course Overview
If you enjoy exploring different ways of cooking and would like a career in the hospitality industry, this course could help you achieve your goal. You'll gain a high standard of cookery skills and have the option to learn other workplace essentials such as health and safety in the kitchen. You will also complete at least 30 hours’ work experience as a central part of the course. This course is ideal for learners coming straight from school who want to break into the catering and hospitality industry, or for chefs already working in the industry who want to extend or refresh their knowledge.
What will I learn?
You will study a wide range of topics by completing the following units:
• Food safety
• Basic food preparation and cooking
• Introduction to personal workplace skills
• Health and safety and food safety awareness in catering
• Introduction to kitchen equipment
• Applying for jobs and courses
• Preparing for work placement
• Investigating rights and responsibilities at work
• Learning from work placement
• Serving food and drink
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
You will be assessed by practical assessments in the College's restaurant and will also complete theory-based assignments.
You will be expected to complete 30 hours in an industry-related placement, which is an essential part of your course, giving you hands-on practical experience of working in the industry.
Your final qualification on successfully completing the course is a Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to Culinary Skills (QCF).
Entry Requirements
Usual entry requirements are 4 GCSEs at grade 1 or 2 or equivalent experience, but entry is determined on an individualised basis and subject to an interview.
Additional Costs and Information
You will need to supply your own uniform and kit for this course which we will discuss with you during your interview. In cases of financial hardship you may be eligible for funds to help with the cost of this.
Educational activities and competitions are an important part of the course and may incur an additional cost.
You will be able to take home some food items at a small charge.
What Could I Do Next?
After successfully completing this course you will be able to progress on to Level 2 Technical Certificate in Professional Cookery, or move into a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Professional Cookery or Food and Beverage Services. You could also go directly into employment as a general kitchen assistant, trainee chef or front of house staff member.
