Course Overview
There are two distinctly different job roles within this occupational profile: Hairdresser and Barber. Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create a variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for both ladies and men.Barbers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men.Hairdressers and barbers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.
What will I learn?
This apprenticeship is broken down into 2 parts. All apprentices will complete the mandatory core skills and knowledge for hairdressing and barbering (part 1) and will then choose the occupational option route for hairdressing or barbering (part 2).
Part 1 covers units of:
- Professionalism and values
- Behaviours and communication
- Safe working practices
- Consultation
Part 2 features a route for hairdressing or barbering:
The hairdressing pathway covers the units:
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Cut hair using a range of techniques
- Style and finish hair using a range of techniques
- Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques
You will then choose one of the optional units:
- Perming hair
- Hair relaxing treatments and techniques
- Hair extension services
The barbering pathway covers the units:
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Cutting hair using barbering techniques
- Style and finish men's hair
- Cut facial hair into shape
- Shaving services
Study, Assessment and Qualifications
The duration of this apprenticeship will take 24 months to complete.
The hairdressing pathway requires you to attend college for 1 day per week during term time, the barbering pathway is undertaken solely in the workplace.
Entry Requirements
Minimum GCSE grade D (or equivalent) in Maths and English.
All applicants will be required to pass initial assessments in Maths, English and ICT, where an Entry Level 3 grade must be achieved for acceptance onto the apprenticeship programme
