Course Overview

If your favourite chair has had the stuffing knocked out of it over the years and is in need of some tender loving care, then this course is for you. We will show you how to safely use the tools, such as magnetic tack hammers, tack lifters and web stretchers, to bring new life to your upholstered furniture.The course is suitable for those new to upholstery and those with some experience who wish to improve their skills. For those new to this craft we recommend you start with a small project, e.g. dining chair or stool. Completion of a project will depend on its size and your level of skills and experience.

What will I learn?

You will be shown the basic skills and techniques used for the traditional or modern methods of upholstery, including removing old materials and selecting replacement fabrics.

Upon completion of the full course you will be able to identify and use a variety of materials used in upholstery use tools and equipment safely, identify a range of furniture styles and demonstrate a range of upholstery skills

During the course you will learn traditional or modern upholstery techniques using the best method to suit your project, basic repairs, ensuring the frame is sound by filling in holes, re-gluing joints etc. You will also learn the correct handling of fabrics and materials using the correct procedures to cut, stich and fix a range of fabrics and materials such as webbing hessian animal hair/coir fibre and wadding. The safe handling of tools including magnetic tack hammers, tack lifters and rippling chisels will be covered.

Study, Assessment and Qualifications

Assessment is informal, based on your personal targets and the learning outcomes, and will be undertaken regularly with you by the course lecturer. There are no final qualifications associated with the course.

Additional Costs and Information

Please bring your project to the first session. You are required to purchase the materials necessary to complete your project. You may be able to purchase hessian, a variety of stuffing materials, tacks and twine from the lecturer. Basic upholstery tools are available for you to use during the sessions. At the start of the course you will receive information about tools, materials, basic upholstery techniques, a list of suppliers and a recommended reading list.

Please Note: As storage facilities are unavailable you are required to take your project home at the end of each session.

Along with your chosen item, please bring scissors, tape measure, notebook and pen/pencil. You may also bring a camera if you wish to record your progress throughout the course.

Please note that there is no parking at the Methuen Centre, Corsham. The closest car park is in the High Street, adjacent to The Methuen Arms. There is a charge for parking.

This 30-week course runs in 10-week blocks on a Thursday from 19:00-21:00 at the Methuen Centre, Corsham from 19.09.24 to 03.07.25. The sessions will run between:
